Artist’s Statement

I am an artist because I choose to be an artist.  I am a playful artist and never take my art too seriously!  I would defeat the ecstatic and lovely feelings of happiness and freedom I get when I am “working” if I become too serious about my art!  I have no other purpose in doing art than to entertain myself, and the sharing of that art with others.

When an idea strikes me, I go to my studio and find all the elements I need to play with the idea, whether it is about paint, paper, collage, writing, poems, 3-D projects like assemblage, doll making, etc., sewing, quilting, furniture painting, or any combination of mediums.   I do most everything… just whatever strikes my fancy.  When I am asked what is my favorite way to “art”, I cannot answer… I love it all!  Most of the projects I do turn out fine.  I really don’t ever feel like I have failed in art.  If the piece doesn’t work now, it might later as an additive to another project.

My favorite things about doing art is the freedom, the ability to go in any direction, to chose any media, to end up with any product, without having to explain, to defend, to feel wrong!  Currently, in the last month, I have played with tangling, illustration, practicing my drawing skills, sewing some bunk quilts, journal making, collage, doll making, organizing my rubber stamps, pens, pencils, markers, etc.  I have always been an artist and played with mixed media… I always want to find new ideas that stretch me to make original art. The progression of my life experiences leading to this point is typical, yet unique, and far too extensive to list here.  I am just happy to be in the here and now, doing art my way.
